  1. Foreigners wishing to travel to Thailand must apply for a visa from the Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate-General located in their country of residence or from the Royal Thai Embassy assigned to their country of residence. In this context, the Royal Thai Embassy in Buenos Aires only provides visa services to individuals currently located in Argentina, Paraguay, or Uruguay.

  1. However, foreigners of certain nationalities can travel to Thailand without a visa (visa exemption) if they meet the specified conditions. There are 2 categories as follows:
    (1) countries that are exempted from visa requirements for tourism and can stay in Thailand for no more than 60 days; and

(2) countries that have visa exemption agreements with Thailand.

  1. In addition, foreigners of certain nationalities can apply for a visa on arrival (VOA) at certain designated Thai Immigration checkpoints upon arrival in Thailand and stay in Thailand for no more than 15 days.

  1. General qualifications for Thai visa applicants are as follows:
  • Hold a valid passport or travel document with at least 6 months of validity at the time of their arrival in Thailand
  • Have evidence that demonstrates the intention to depart Thailand after the end of their stay, such as a plane ticket, and have a visa or evidence certifying them to return to their country of residence or continue to another country (in the case of a transit request).
  • Not prohibited from entering Thailand under the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979), such as having been sentenced to prison by a Thai or foreign court, having circumstances leading to the belief that they are a threat to society or will cause harm to the peace or public safety, or being a person for whom a foreign government has issued an arrest warrant.
  • Have sufficient funds to cover expenses during their stay in Thailand as required by regulations, i.e. at least 20,000 baht per person.

  1. In applying for a visa, foreigners must obtain a visa that correlates with the purpose of their entry into Thailand. Visa approval is at the discretion of the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate General. Special regulations and criteria have also been established for considering whether to grant visas to foreigners of certain nationalities.

  1. Please note that the validity of the visa is different from the period of stay. The visa validity refers to a period of time during which the visa can be used to enter Thailand. Typically, a visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue, but in some cases, it may be issued for 6 months, 1 year or even 3 years. The visa validity is determined at the discretion of the Royal Thai Embassy and is indicated on the visa. On the other hand, the period of stay refers to a period of time during which the traveler is permitted to stay in Thailand upon arrival at the port of entry. The length of stay depends on the type of visa. For example, a transit visa is permitted for no more than 30 days, a tourist visa for no more than 30 or 60 days, and a non-immigrant visa for no more than 90 days from the date of arrival. The period of stay granted by the immigration authority is stamped in your passport at the time of entry.
  2. Foreigners who wish to extend their stay beyond the permitted period may apply for an extension of stay at the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok (Division 1, Government Center Complex, Chaeng Watthana Road, Bangkok, Tel. 0-2141-9889) or at the Immigration Bureau in other provinces. For more information on how to apply for an extension of stay, you can visit the Immigration Bureau’s website: www.immigration.go.th

  3. Foreigners entering Thailand on any type of visa are not permitted to work until they have been granted a work permit. Therefore, foreigners wishing to work in Thailand must obtain a correct visa type, the Non-Immigrant Visa “B,” in order to be able to apply for a work permit. For more information on how to apply work permits, you can visit the Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour: http://www.mol.go.th/employee/permission_work

  4. The Royal Thai Embassy has the authority to issue visas. However, immigration authorities have the power to grant entry and determine the length of stay in Thailand. In some cases, immigration authorities may deny entry of a foreign national with a valid visa if there is reason to believe that such persons have characteristics or behaviour that bar them from entering Thailand under the Immigration Act of 1979.
